The Spending Review

These documents were published in October 2010.

“Spending Reviews are the way that government sets spending plans for each department over a period of several years. Departmental spending covers the full range of government activities. It includes defence and welfare payments, business support and environmental protection, as well as the funding of schools and hospitals.

The Budget in June set out the overall level of public spending across the whole government for the four years from 2011/12 to 2014/15. The Spending Review will allocate that overall spending level to individual departments.

Before the start of the next financial year in April 2011, each department will publish details of how its new budget will change the activities and services that it delivers.”

The key points of the Spending Review, and some additional reaction and analysis are detailed on the BBC website.

Emergency Budget

This report was published in June 2010.

So what does the Coalition Government’s emergency budget have in store for us? A VAT rise and cuts to welfare and other spending doesn’t bode well for many of us. But Chancellor George Osborne assures us that it is all necessary for a “brighter future”.

The BBC has a helpful summary of the budget’s key points, and it also has a useful budget calculator so you can see how the budget will affect you.

Lots to think about and lots to comment on…

Budget Report 2010 : What does it all mean?

This report was published 24th March 2010.

“A Budget for Recovery” is how it has been described by the Chancellor. Stamp duty cut for first-time buyers, 3p rise in fuel duty, and £2.5bn support for small businesses are just a few of the highlights.

But how will the budget affect you this time around? Feel free to give us your tuppence worth (if you have it to spare!).

Pre-Budget Report 2008

As promised yesterday, here’s the Pre-Budget Report 2008.

Borrow now and pay later seems to be the state of play. Is that not how we got into bother in the first place? What do I know? I’m only a humble librarian.

Here’s what the Beeb thinks: Gamble! Gamble! This is beginning to sound more like an episode of Bullseye every day: Ok Alistair, listen to Tony…101 or more with 6 darts and the economy recovers; non-dart-player to throw first.

Hopefully we won’t have to suffer the “Look what you could have won” moment.

Scottish Budget: Draft Budget 2009-10

The Scottish Government published their draft budget for 2009-10 yesterday. Have a squizz to see what our tax money is spent on.

“Our aim is to achieve a sustainable economic growth that will build on a strong and stable Scottish economy, provide prosperity and opportunities for all and ensure that future generations can enjoy a better quality of life. The benefits from delivering this single Purpose will be shared by all of Scotland’s people, helping us to realise the considerable potential of our nation and our people”

Who would have thought that columns of figures could be so exciting?
