The Scottish Broadcasting Commission published their final report today, which covers the future of the broadcasting industry in Scotland.

“It is our belief and aspiration that more high-quality creative content should be produced in Scotland in future than has ever been the case in the past. Within the right framework, this will certainly deliver better television services and more choice on more platforms for Scottish viewers. Stronger broadcasting within a wider and fast-growing digital media sector will also provide the basis from which to develop a dynamic and successful production industry creating world-class content for worldwide audiences. This is a historic opportunity and we firmly believe that Scotland stands on the threshold of something special.”

Across the globe: the Paralympics started in Beijing; thousands took refuge from Hurricane Ike in the Caribbean; and Angola held its first parliamentary elections for 16 years.

At home: heavy rain struck England and Wales, causing flooding in many areas; a pair of golden eagle chicks took flight for the first time; and UWS’s ’super-campus’ opened in Dumfries.

Cross-campus fitba: no league games this week because of the international break. Scotland, however, did have the decency to give Macedonia their first international victory since Alexander was a boy (not strictly true, but why let a good line go to waste?), going down 1-0 in Skopje. In tennis, Andy Murray is in the final of the US Open (10pm tonight). Good luck tae ye, sir! He only has to beat the greatest tennis player ever to have drawn breath, so more power to your elbow, Mr Murray. Aw ra best!
